On this date in 1886, Lt. Charles B. Gatewood, accompanied only by two Apache scouts, entered an Apache camp in the Sierra Madre Mountains south of the Mexican border and persuaded Geronimo to surrender to General Nelson A. Miles. This photograph is identified as a group of U.S. Military and Apache Scouts momentarily stopped at a waterhole while in pursuit of Geronimo, Naiche and 34 other Chiricahua Apache men, women and children.
